BlackBerry and Google Collaborate to Bolster Android Device Security

Canadian manufacturer BlackBerry has joined hands with Google to bring its security based expertise to the Android platform, a move that follows BlackBerry’s recent partnership with Samsung. The move will allow Google’s suite of mobile productivity tools to run on BlackBerry’s device management system.

Back in November, BlackBerry announced its partnership with Samsung and other top tech companies to expand its security based services beyond its own platform. The collaboration with Google is aimed at managing devices that come with Android for Work – an initiative from Google to securely classify and separate business from personal data and apps.

The Canadian manufacturer has years of expertise in dealing with devices for corporations and entreprises. This move could strategically position the Android platform as a more prominent solution in the business sector.

Meanwhile, Google also announced partnerships on Android for Work with top companies including SAP SE, Samsung and SOTI Inc.

BlackBerry Makes a Comeback in the Touch Segment with the Mid-Range ‘Leap’

BlackBerry made an appearance at the MWC event and dropped two new smartphones – Leap and Keian. The former one is a 5-inch touch device, priced at $275 (Rs. 17,000). The BlackBerry Leap is a mid-range phone with average specifications. It comes in the matte look with textured back cover.

Surprisingly, the Canadian firm didn’t reveal a flagship instead went for another conventional piece.

Talking about the apparatus powering the device, then the BlackBerry Leap is equipped with 1.5GHz Qualcomm processor paired with 2GB of RAM. An 8MP rear shooter along with a 5 MP camera sits comfortably on the device. The Leap is supported by 2,800mAh non-removable battery. The major highlight of the phone, as stated before, is its touch screen. The company has returned to the touch arena with Leap.

The phone is 9.5mm thick and runs on the company’s own BB OS 10.3.5. That means users will have a Siri-like Assistant to help them with their problems. For the time being, there is no information about its price or its availability.

BlackBerry OS 10.3.1 Update Reportedly Rolling Out on February 19

BlackBerry will reportedly roll out BB10 OS version 10.3.1 starting February 19 to all BB10 devices. It is worth mentioning that only the BlackBerry Classic and BlackBerry Passport handsets come with the latest BB10 OS out-of-the-box.
The update was earlier expected to arrive in January, but was officially pushed back to February, reports N4BB - the publication that is now claiming the February 19 date based on information gleaned from BlackBerry sources. The report adds that the BB10 OS 10.3.1 update was due to be rolled on Saturday, but was pulled due to issues including erasing the data on the device.
he information is unconfirmed by BlackBerry and originates from N4BB.com, who claim to have it from a source within the company. Regardless, the update will be available for the BlackBerry Passport, BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9983, BlackBerry Z30, BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry Q10.
For now, BlackBerry has yet to confirm the start of the rollout on February 19, and users are advised to take the reports of the release date with a pinch of salt as the company may yet run into unforeseen issues.
The BlackBerry OS 10.3.1 will be bringing the reverse contrast mode in other BlackBerry handsets. Blocking contacts from calling and texting will also be possible after the update. Additionally, users can hide the desired images and videos from others. Most importantly, the update will introduce the Blackberry Assistant, a Siri-like voice-based virtual assistant, which was revealed last year in July.
Furthermore, a Battery Saving mode has also been included with the update that cuts down on smartphone's display brightness, notifications and lowers the CPU performance for longer battery life. Customisation of notifications like particular ringtones for select callers and selecting an LED colour for notifications will also be possible.
The firm last month launched the BlackBerry Classic in India, priced at Rs. 31,990. The company also launched its flagship BlackBerry Passport back in September. The Passport was priced at Rs. 49,990 in India.
