Android Lollipop on just 1.6% of Google phones
Latest OS struggling for traction after sluggish start.
Android Lollipop has been loaded onto just 1.6% of Android devices worldwide, despite being available since the end of November.
However, that number represents an improvement on previous figures, which showed it hadn’t even managed to reach 0.1% of Android phones at the start of December.
The OS was widely derided for a series of issues, which saw compatible phones rendered unusable.
Users complained that their devices either failed to start up or that when they did, apps could not be opened and keyboards failed to register touches.
Just this week, HTC said that these issue had caused it to miss its 90 day deadline to have Android Lollipop on all of its One (M7) and One (M8) handsets.
Other than HTC’s phones, only Nexus branded devices and Google Play Editions of top–end phones have been able to install Lollipop.
In the meantime, Google’s 15 month old KitKat is still going strong, up to 39.7%.
Combined versions of the even older Android Jelly Bean make up a total of 44.5%, showing just how bad Android is still struggling with fragmentation.
Android Lollipop is likely to make further in–roads in the next few months with the launch of new devices using the latest OS.
